Volunteers

Volunteering at the Museum
The Great Lakes Children's Museum operates with a small staff; therefore, volunteers are vital to help make operations run smoothly. The Children's Museum values all our volunteers. They make it possible for the Museum to enact its mission of offering exciting, educational, safe experiences for all our visitors. Volunteering is a wonderful way to contribute your time and skills to benefit our community, as well as to develop new skills and interests, meet new friends, and make a difference in the life of a child. The Museum provides endless challenges for creativity, imagination, and exploration, and is currently looking for dedicated volunteers to help fulfill it's mission. There is a variety of volunteer opportunities available, from one-time to short and long term, including:

Toddler Time - help our youngest visitors grow & develop
Interactive Story Time - read a book & facilitate an activity
Special Events - help with special events throughout the year
Gallery Guide - guide our visitors on our busiest days
Listening to the River Programs - facilitate watershed-based activities
Summer Science Workshops - facilitate one-time science programs and activities
Administrative - help in the office
Committees - share your ideas and help guide the Museum
Craft Prep - plan and prep hands-on craft activities
Volunteer Coordinator - coordinate volunteers and volunteer activities
Outreach Programs - represent the Museum through community events & school programs
Gardening - spruce up the Museum's grounds
Fundraising - share our message and help us raise money
...and more!

Eligibility
In addition to adult volunteers, we welcome youth volunteers, who may begin training at age 14. In addition to learning work skills, meeting new people, and trying new things, youth volunteers have an opportunity to have an impact on the lives of our visitors through encouragement, challenge, and exciting new ideas.

Benefits
The Museum appreciates the time and energy each volunteer offers to its visitors. In order to show its appreciation to dedicated volunteers, the Museum offers the following benefits:
  • Great Lakes Children's Museum logo gear

  • Volunteer sail on the Schooner Madeline

  • Annual Museum membership - 50 hours of volunteer service

  • Pins for various levels of service

  • Recognition in Museum newsletter

Orientation and Training
All volunteers attend orientation and training prior to joining the active volunteers. Each volunteer will be given a handbook to guide them through the process.
