Board of Trustees
Officers (Executive Board)
President, Sean Skarshaug: is the owner of Traverse Reproduction & Supply Company who has extensive marketing and design of marketing materials experience, has chaired the Home Builders Association fundraiser for 5 years, and has contributed countless hours to Montessori Children’s House. Sean is married with two children.
Vice-President, Jim Julian: is a Financial Advisor with Wachovia Securities and has a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Communications and Economics. He brings his vast experience of over 16 years in the financial services industry to the Museum Board. Jim is a member of various Chambers of Commerce and past chairman of a marketing committee. He is also an active member of the Traverse City Sunrise Rotary. He is married with two children.
Treasurer/Secretary, Heidi Wendel: who oversees the Museum’s bookkeeping and finances is a CPA with Dennis, Gartland & Niergarth, where she became a partner in 2007. Heidi has extensive experience working with schools, nonprofit organizations and local government agencies. She is designated as a Certified Fraud Examiner. She brings her accounting and general business knowledge to the Museum Board. Heidi is married with three children.
Board of Trustees
Thomas Ackerson: is a Certified Public Accountant with eighteen years of experience in audit, tax and consulting. Thomas is currently a Senior Manager with Rehmann’s healthcare management team and serves both physicians and dentists across Northwestern Michigan. He brings strength to the organization through his financial background and management experience. Kjirsten Boeve: graduated from Wheaton College in 2003 with a BA in Psychology. She is currently enrolled in the Masters in Counselor Education at Western Michigan University’s off campus program in Traverse City. Kjirsten has taken several education classes throughout the course of her program. As a mother of three young children, Kjirsten is also gaining expertise in both the informal learning and teaching areas. She is married with three children.
Jennifer Schell Bonifacio: is a pediatrician with Kids Creek Children’s Clinic, who has a strong interest in promoting safe, fun opportunities for kids and families in our community. She has extensive expertise in childhood growth and development; and is in contact with many children and families in our community. She has served on her elementary school PTO board, Traverse City Area Public Schools District Advisory Committee and sex education committee and on the Grand Traverse Resort & Spa Board of Governors.
Carl Ferguson: was most recently Development Specialist for the Land Information Access Association, successfully writing grants to private, state and federal organizations and implementing projects with a focus on youth environmental awareness and education. A former Marketing Director for a large plastics recycling firm, Carl has many years of experience explaining environmental concepts and practices to a wide variety of audiences. His skills and experience are important as the Museum continues to advance its education strategy. He holds a B.S. in Geological Sciences, M.S in Environmental Science and an M.B.A. from the University of Michigan. He is married and has three daughters.

Katie Lowran: is the Administration Manager for Grand Traverse County and a graduate of Michigan State University with a major in Psychology. Katie has been committed to a broad cross-section of community and national organizations involving children for the past 15 years and has assumed many leadership roles in those organizations. She is a 2009 graduate of the Traverse City Chamber of Commerce Leadership Grand Traverse program. Katie has three children and has a passion for children's education.
Brian Ursu: C.F.P.® Is the President of Veritas Investment Management LLC located in Traverse City. He founded Veritas in 2005 after fifteen years experience in the financial services industry. In addition to being a Certified Financial Planner, he is a True Wealth Consultant helping his clients focus their priorities on attaining “True Wealth”. He is married with four children.
