Play to Learn -- Why Children's Museums are Important

Today, educators, parents, early childhood specialists, and childcare professionals recognize the importance of children’s early years in shaping their attitudes toward life and learning. To answer the need for providing enriching and educational experiences for children during these critical years, children’s museums are opening and expanding at a rapid pace worldwide. There are over 300 children’s museums in the United States, all founded on the simple fact that children learn best by doing.

The Northern Michigan area has a nationwide reputation for an excellent quality of life and family-friendly attitudes. The Museum is located in a region of exceptional natural resources with many opportunities for outdoor recreational activities for our youth and their families. However, many of our community’s resources for youth and families are limited, whether due to size, cost, hours of operation or, in particular, seasonal access.

The Great Lakes Children’s Museum fills the need to stimulate young minds, bring families together, and provide a fun educational experience year after year.
