Soil Science in a Soda Bottle (Grades 1, 2 & 3)

What’s in soil? How do scientists characterize different types of soil? How does water flow through soil? How much soil is there? The answers to these and other questions are discovered during this investigation of the properties of soil using handy, ubiquitous 2-liter soda bottles and home-made soil sieves. Students observe demonstrations and work in small groups to learn soil testing techniques and identify unknown soil samples based on observed characteristics. A demonstration of the total amount of soil available to grow crops on planet Earth gets everyone thinking about how to conserve soil and protect our fragile “agrisphere” (the part of the earth where crops are grown). We divide the class into small groups (6 to 8 students/group is ideal) and repeat the program as needed. Each program lasts about 20 minutes. Plan on spending one and one-half hours at the Museum.
