The A-MAZE-ing Journey* (Grades 1, 2 & 3)

If you are a drop of water where do you really go? Everyone knows the vocabulary of the water cycle: liquid, vapor, solid, evaporate, condense, precipitate, accumulate. But do students truly understand the processes of the water cycle or the dynamics of how water moves through our planetary watershed? Play to learn these important concepts by taking the A-MAZE-ing Journey through the water cycle in the Museum. After a brief orientation, students are distributed throughout the gallery at stations where they find water represented in different forms. By throwing a special water cycle die for instructions, they move around the gallery as water molecules experiencing evaporation, condensation, precipitation, accumulation and retention in an “up-close and personal” way. At each station, students record their path and learn interesting facts about the water cycle or conduct mini-experiments before moving on to the next destination. At the conclusion of the activity, students gather to review the data and discuss their journey before completing their visit with free exploration time in the Gallery and creating a craft in the Activity Room.

*This intensive program is designed for large groups of 30-50 students. Plan on one and one-quarter hours to complete the program and an additional forty-five minutes of free exploration time in the Museum and Activity Room.
