Life in a Lighthouse (Grades 1, 2, 3 & 4)

History and geography come together in this program about lighthouses. Students learn about the first lighthouse, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, and how that lighthouse was responsible for the success of the port city it guarded. They find out about lighthouse daymarks and characteristics, how lenses focus the light so it can be seen very far away, what life was like for lighthouse-keeping familes, and why modern technology is making lighthouses obsolete. This 30-minute program is usually given mid-way through the visit so students have an opportunity to return to the lighthouse keeper's quarters exhibit for dramatic play and deeper understanding. Plan on spending one and one-half hours at the Museum.
