+PLUS: Providing Learning for the Under Served

  1. +PLUS is a program created by the Great Lakes Children’s Museum to assist children, families, and educators for whom regular admission costs pose a significant obstacle to attending the Museum. The goal of the +PLUS Program is to allow under-served children to enjoy the hands-on interactive learning experiences of the Great Lakes Children’s Museum and provide disadvantaged families the chance to join in the fun and educational opportunities together.
  2. The program consists of free admission for individuals, school study trips, and other children’s groups. These free admissions are provided according to need, as determined by a third‑party agency, such as Northern Michigan Head Start, Child & Family Services, Women’s Resource Center, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, and more.
  3. For more information, or to make a donation to our +PLUS Program so that more under-served children can benefit from the hands-on learning we offer, please visit our +PLUS detail page or contact the Museum.

Free Summer Admission to Active Duty Military

Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, the Great Lakes Children’s Museum voluntarily participates in a program coordinated by the National Endowment for the Arts and Blue Star Families that provides free admission to active duty military throughout the summer. This is our fourth summer of joining more than 1500 other museums across the nation to support military families seeking a summertime museum experience. We are pleased to be able to give them some hands-on learning and family fun here in in Northern Michigan.

The military ID holder plus up to five family members receive free admission. Two additional family members may receive the half-off discount described below. For a description of the Blue Star Museums program and a list of all participating museums, click here.

Active Military Discount

Throughout the rest of the year (non-summer months) the Great Lakes Children’s Museum gratefully supports our active duty military personnel by providing them and their families (up to 8 people) admission to the Museum at a 50% discount.

Military Support

In 2012, we gave 420 half-price discounts and 318 free admissions to active duty and retired military. We also hosted our fifth annual free Coast Guard Family Night for families stationed at Air Station Traverse City. The total value of all of these items is of over $2100.
