Let’s Go Sailing
Opened on March 21, 2015, Let’s Go Sailing is designed to allow guests to explore the fun and physics of sailing. By experimenting with sail position and boat position, guests can sail down wind (easy), up wind (harder) and across the wind (most challenging). Wind is fixed from the North at a constant speed. There are “hints” for anyone not sure how to get everything in position – watch for matching color coding between the boat-cars and tables – and just remember the sail always needs to curve AWAY from the wind. Guests interested in learning more are encouraged to connect with exhibit partners, Traverse Area Community Sailing.
Let’s Go Sailing was made possible through the collaboration of the Charles M Bauervic Foundation, Jonathan & Marissa Wege, FirstMerit Bank and other nonprofit foundations with local interests in Traverse City. Alpha 3D Professionals and Quantum Sail Design provided the subject matter expertise to make the physics fun and interesting. Chicks for Charity, Chris Lambert, Erick Drake, Dick Goerz and Jeremy Selden gave their time and talent to transform the concept into a real-life working exhibit.
