January is Night Explorer Month!

Every Friday In January at 11:00am First Steps Science is reaching for the stars! Join us and earn a Junior Ranger Night Explorer Patch from the National Parks Service.  Here’s how to get your patch:

  1. Let us know where to send your patch and activity guide
  2. Participate in two or more LIVE* sessions of First Steps Science in January

*OR, check out the recorded YouTube videos and send a photo or quick video to impact@glcm.org. Just show that you did the activities from two or more programs this January and we’ll send you your patch.

Showcase your work with TADL Makerfest!

We’re teaming up with the STEAM/Maker Alliance of Northwest Michigan to kick off TADL Makerfest 2021! Normally this is a big in-person event but this year it’s going to be virtual event taking place over several months. This Friday’s (January 8) First Steps Science is the first activity of Makerfest!

After you do your Day and Night activity, you can showcase it at the STEAM/Maker Monthly Showcase! This event is a fun way to show off what you have made and learned. Families who complete the activity and a brief follow-up survey will be entered to win a monthly STEM Prize Pack and a program-end drawing for a STEM Kit of your choosing.

 

 

Day and Night: Friday, January 8th at 11:00am

Experiment with a ball and a flashlight. Find out how day and night happens. Find out why you can’t see stars during the day. Explore the colors of sunlight. 

Moon and Stars:Friday, January 15th at 11:00am

From down here on Earth, what we see in the night sky changes. Explore why the Moon changes shape and why the Big Dipper turns upside down.

Our Solar System: Friday, January 22nd at 11:00am

My Very Excited Mother Just Served Us Nine Pancakes! Together we will make a model of our Solar System and learn about the size and order of the planets.

Deep Space: Friday, January 29th at 11:00am

Our solar system is part of a large galaxy called the Milky Way. Discover what galaxies, supernova, and black holes are all about with hands-on projects.
